Starting an ecommerce business literally opens a world of opportunities, with potential customers coming from around the corner to anywhere around the globe.

But some web companies have been inadvertently landing themselves fines from both authorities and card brands, simply from a lack of knowledge about trading laws.

“We’ve spoken previously about protecting your account from carding attacks and fraud, but there are a few unexpected risks when selling online,” cautions Brian Kinsella, Elavon Senior Regional Fraud Manager.

“Not only could you unwittingly fall foul of the authorities, card brands such as Visa and Mastercard impose significant fines if you don’t remain compliant.

“Most of our customers don’t have any problems but, every so often, we hear about issues cropping up which can prove costly. So, we’ve picked out the top problems we see ecommerce businesses facing through ignorance or mistake – and have advice on avoiding the same pitfalls.”

“It’s easy to make these mistakes if you don’t do your research,” said Brian. “And it’s important to remember you not only risk legal sanction, but Visa or Mastercard could impose heavy fines.

“But don’t worry – it’s all part of doing good business. Understand what you’re selling and where your customers are and you shouldn’t go far wrong.

“And if you’re in any doubt, get in touch with us and we can help you out.”
